Judas stepped outside and lit a cigarette. He shielded the flame from his lighter with his palm as the icy wind threatened to blow it out. A green ford was parked across the road from the hospital entrance. Judas rolled his eyes and inhaled deeply on his cigarette.

Two men came walking along the path at the side of the building, both of them in the employ of the Campbells.

The taller one, Murdoch, immediately came over to Judas. He had a look of genuine concern on his face. “We’re not too late are we, Jude? We dropped Mrs Campbell off, but thought it better to just hang about and not get in the way, you know, if he’s already…” His voice tapered off.

“Naw.” Judas let out a cloud of smoke from between his lips. He was oddly touched to be addressed by his actual name, and not by the usual nickname. It occurred to him that maybe MacIsaac was right. Maybe he would always be at risk of being framed, or worse, by guys who who’d probably grown used to regarding him with suspicion. Murdo the tension in the air. Not getaways but the highly important job of seeing that Callum and Mrs Campbell were ferried around in comfort and safety. So to have his trust, or at least some half-assed respect, was actually reassuring.

Murdoch stared off down the road, then back at Judas. “Doesn’t look good.”

Judas took another draw on his cigarette. “Naw. It doesn’t. I don’t think we’re gonna see him back on his feet again. Fucking shame.”

“End of an era.” Murdoch sighed deeply. He could have been wrong, but Judas had the strange and not at all unpleasant impression that Murdoch, and maybe even his silent companion, whose name escaped Judas, were somehow seeking his approval. The whole gang knew now that whatever happened, Fergus was in charge. It wasn’t any secret that Judas was his preferred ally. The two men each lit cigarettes and remained at the hospital entrance with Judas when they couldn’t have failed to notice MacIsaac sitting in his car across the street.

Judas raised his chin and smiled. “End of an era.” He echoed Murdoch’s statement.
